The Music Department of Colby College seeks applicants for a unique tenure-track position in electronic music, music theory, and composition at the rank of assistant professor, starting September 1, 2021. The successful candidate will join a small, active, and highly collaborative department and will have a central role in further expanding our electronic music program. We seek a dynamic teacher and scholar who will offer classes in music theory, composition, and the candidate’s field of interest, as well as teach students in Colby’s Music and Interdisciplinary Computation Major (offered jointly with Computer Science). The candidate will also maintain a strong research trajectory in their field(s) of specialization.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The department is especially interested in candidates who have documented success in undergraduate teaching, as well as in writing, performing, and producing a range of electronic music (and/or creating acoustic and electronic music for video, film, and dance).

The successful candidate will have a vision for electronic music courses that will both generate excitement among music majors and minors and appeal to students across a diverse liberal arts campus. The Colby Music Department will move into a new performance center in 2023 (http://www.colby.edu/news/2020/10/03/colby-begins-groundwork-for-gordon-center/), built to foster collaboration among the departments of Music, Theater and Dance, and Cinema Studies as well as to facilitate work with the Waterville Downtown Arts Collaborative and the Colby Art Museum. We are looking for a colleague who will have the ability to contribute to these cross-disciplinary initiatives in dynamic ways. Our teaching load is four courses in the first year, alternating between four and five courses per year thereafter, including the option to teach one course during Colby’s January term. Faculty members also serve as mentors for a limited number of independent studies and honors projects.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates holding the Ph.D. or D.M.A by September 1, 2021.
