Assistant Professor - Music Theory

The Department of Music at the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN–LA CROSSE is soliciting qualified candidates for a tenure-track position to teach Music Theory and Aural Skills, a music theory general education course, and other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the department.

Starting Date is: August 29, 2022.

The Department of Music at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse includes 6 tenure-track faculty, 3 instructional academic staff, several ad-hoc positions and approximately 75 undergraduate majors and minors. The Department provides a strong foundation including quality curriculum in music history, theory, applied music lessons and ensemble experiences within our B.S./B.A. in Music program. Our mission is to provide diverse musical experiences for our music majors and minors, university students and the community. Depending on the candidate’s expertise, other responsibilities may be selected from the following:
> teaching applied lessons (preferred: clarinet, oboe, bassoon; trumpet, trombone, euphonium, and tuba; violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar; voice)
> coordinating and teaching music appreciation; or
> other music-related courses such as music business, coaching small ensembles, or directing ensembles.

The candidate should be able to convey a sense of passion by performing and modeling in relevant classroom settings. UWL and the Department of Music grants opportunities for professional development both on- and off-campus.


Required Qualifications:
> Doctorate in music (PhD. or. D. M.A.);
> University classroom teaching experience in music theory and aural skills (beyond graduate teaching assistantships);
> Evidence of university-level related teaching experiences that could contribute to the other responsibilities listed above including a general education music theory course;
> A record of research and creative activities in candidate’s areas of expertise;
> Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion;
> Evidence of a collaborative and open-minded approach to working with students and colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications:
> Advanced Degree in Music Theory or Composition;
> Established record of teaching excellence within the music theory/aural skills courses;
> Established record of teaching university-level music appreciation;
> A proven record of scholarship and creative activity through publications and performances;
> Evidence of ability, background or experience in managing a music business course scheduled in rotation with other upper-division music electives.

We are seeking a teacher-artist who will inspire students through expert delivery of music theory and aural skills as well as a general education music theory course. The ideal candidate will be engaged in promoting composition through upper-division courses and organizing the La Crosse New Music Festival. The applicant should also convey a commitment to recruiting music majors for the program, serving on relevant department committees, and providing leadership in the revision and creation of music theory- and composition-related courses and emphases. The candidate will be expected to engage in research and creative activities relevant to theory and any other areas of expertise.
