Full-time visiting faculty

Grand Valley State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, invites applications for a full-time, visiting faculty position in the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance beginning August, 2022.

Visiting Faculty positions are renewable one-year appointments (up to three years), depending on satisfactory performance and continued teaching needs of the department.

Primary duties will be to teach the Music Theory sequence for undergraduates and additional upper-level courses as needed.


The successful candidate will have begun developing a national reputation in their area of expertise through ongoing research and publication in the music theory field. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations.

The successful candidate will be conversant in contemporary music theory pedagogy while demonstrating the ability to effectively teach at the undergraduate level in the areas of written and aural music theory.

Required Qualifications and Education:
> Bachelor’s degree in music
> A graduate degree (master’s or doctorate) in music theory or composition
> Training and experience in contemporary music theory pedagogy
> Excellent verbal and written communication skills
> Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.
> Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:
> A completed doctorate in music theory
> Demonstrated ability to effectively teach core and upper-level undergraduate music theory
