• Providing dynamic, excellent teaching in Music Theory and Aural Skills courses, primarily undergraduate with some graduate-level courses.
• Coordinating the theory and aural skills area which involves overseeing the aural skills curriculum (hearings, written exams, lesson plans), administering and grading diagnostic and placement exams, helping with recruitment of adjunct faculty when necessary, observing theory and aural skills faculty, etc.
• The typical teaching load is three three-credit hour classes per semester plus one course release for scholarly and creative activity (3 + 3).
• Two of Butler’s key strategic goals are “to create an intentionally diverse, inclusive, and equitable campus community,” and to “build a culture of empowerment, engagement and accountability.” The successful candidate will actively contribute to building an inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population, including the teaching of diverse repertoires. Inclusive and evidence-based pedagogy is expected at Butler University.
• Academic advising; student mentoring; attendance at faculty meetings (department, college, and university); committee participation and other service to the university, community, and profession; and a high profile of local, regional, and national/international scholarly activity is expected of the successful candidate.
Required qualifications include:
• A PhD in Music Theory or its equivalent by the time of appointment
• Evidence of successful music theory/aural skills teaching at the collegiate level
• A record of scholarly accomplishment, and an active program of research.
