Canons of the First Order — In Practice is a four-week online course devoted to the theory and composition of musical canons, led by Ericsson F. Hatfield, PhD candidate in Music Theory at McGill University.

Combining historical contrapuntal methods with contemporary theoretical approaches, the course emphasizes the practical application of canonic techniques through guided composition workshops, analytical demonstrations, and discussions of musical repertoire.

The curriculum covers infinite canon in two, three, and four voices; hexachordal imitation; invertible counterpoint at the octave and twelfth; and mathematical approaches to canonic construction, including the relationship Δh = Δi.

The first three sessions consist of live instruction and practical workshops. The fourth features guest presentations by Dr. Jacob Gran and Daniel Chang, followed by discussion and questions.

Dates: Saturdays, November 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2026

Format: Live online instruction, offered in two cohorts with a maximum of 10 participants each.

Tuition: $300 USD for the complete four-session course.

The course is intended for composers, music theorists, graduate students, and musicians interested in developing a systematic understanding of canonic composition.
