The Society for Music Theory's 49th Annual Meeting is coming to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this November. More than 650 music theorists from colleges, universities, and conservatories around the world will gather for four days of connection, collaboration, and exploration of new directions in music research and practice.
SMT's 1,200-member community spans academics, graduate students, and professionals at the forefront of music theory in higher education. This year's meeting features 150+ presentations alongside workshops, receptions, small-group meetings, and plenty of opportunities to forge meaningful connections. Whether you're faculty, a graduate student, publisher, or administrator, this is where your field comes together.

The 2026 Annual Meeting will be held at the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee. You may reserve a hotel room at the group rate through October 15.

- Conference Guides

The Conference Guides Program, sponsored by the Professional Development Committee, offers a simple and informal means for longer-term SMT members to welcome and connect with newer members. This program plays an important role in making the conference—and discipline—welcoming to all.
If this is your first in-person SMT conference, then we especially encourage you to sign up as a participant! All newer attendees who register online will be paired up with a Guide in advance of the conference and invited to attend a meet-and-greet at the beginning of the conference (Thursday, 05/Nov/2026: 1:00pm - 2:00pm in room Vue North). The deadline to register online is Friday, October 23.
- Prospective Graduate Student Fair

Departments and programs are invited to reserve a table to showcase their degree programs and other offerings at the Prospective Graduate Student Fair. Deadline: October 18, 2026.
- Student Presentation Award

The SMT Student Presentation Award is given annually to a graduate or undergraduate music student for a scholarly presentation (paper or poster) at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Music Theory. The deadline to apply is October 18.
