The Society for Music Theory's 49th Annual Meeting is coming to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this November. More than 650 music theorists from colleges, universities, and conservatories around the world will gather for four days of connection, collaboration, and exploration of new directions in music research and practice.
SMT's 1,200-member community spans academics, graduate students, and professionals at the forefront of music theory in higher education. This year's meeting features 150+ presentations alongside workshops, receptions, small-group meetings, and plenty of opportunities to forge meaningful connections. Whether you're faculty, a graduate student, publisher, or administrator, this is where your field comes together.

The 2026 Annual Meeting will be held at the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee. You may reserve a hotel room at the group rate through October 15.
The room rates are as follows:

- Prospective Graduate Student Fair

Departments and programs are invited to reserve a table to showcase their degree programs and other offerings at the Prospective Graduate Student Fair. Deadline: October 18, 2026.
- Book Auction

Do you have rare, out-of-print, or beloved music books gathering dust on your shelves? Give them a second life and support SMT by donating them to our upcoming Book Auction!
The auction will run online in the lead-up to and during the Annual Meeting, with books available for in-person viewing and pickup in Milwaukee (shipping is also available). To donate, please complete our donation form for each book you'd like to contribute by October 2.
- Student Presentation Award

The SMT Student Presentation Award is given annually to a graduate or undergraduate music student for a scholarly presentation (paper or poster) at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Music Theory. The deadline to apply is October 18.
