SMT members building a kalimba at a national conference

The Executive Board of the Society for Music Theory unanimously approved an adjustment to our membership fees around equity. The new membership rates are as follows (all amounts in USD):

  • $40 for student, retired, and an income less than $35,000 (we have lowered the fees from $45 to $40);
  • $75 for members whose income is between $35,000–$49,999 (we have lowered the fees from $95 to $75);
  • $100 for members whose income is between $50,000–$74,999;
  • $125 for members whose income is between $75,000–$99,999;
  • $150 for members whose income is greater than $100,000;
  • Joint and overseas memberships have been eliminated;
  • Two-year memberships have been eliminated.

This tiered fee structure takes effect July 1, 2020. Given the current economic crisis, we have tried to limit increases in membership fees. While fees for members with an income over $50,000 have increased, we are committed to keeping the fees low for students, retired members, and members with an income less than $50,000 (from $45 to $40). The Executive Board continues to explore ways to contain our costs without cutting budgets for publication, minority travel, and other subventions and awards.
