SMT circulates the following publications.
Music Theory Spectrum appears in print twice a year and is mailed to SMT members, who may also access the journal online. Music Theory Spectrum features articles on a wide range of topics in music theory and analysis, including aesthetics, critical theory and hermeneutics, history of theory, post-tonal theory, linear analysis, rhythm, music cognition, and the analysis of popular musics. The journal welcomes interdisciplinary articles revealing intersections with topics in other fields such as ethnomusicology, mathematics, musicology, philosophy, psychology, and performance.
Music Theory Online (MTO) is a journal of criticism, commentary, research and scholarship. The refereed open-access electronic journal of the Society for Music Theory, MTO has been in continuous publication since 1993. New issues are published four times per year and include articles, reviews, commentaries, and analytical essays.
SMT-V is a peer-reviewed, scholarly video publication that explores a wide range of topics in music theory and analysis. Each video article is about ten minutes in length, published by the Society for Music Theory, and accessible for free via the SMT website.
SMT-Pod is an Open Collaborative Peer Reviewed (OCPR) and creative venue for timely conversations about music theory. Audio-only podcasts offer a unique—though non-traditional—way of engaging with music, analysis, and contemporary issues in the field. As opposed to the heavy, jargon-laden publications we are used to working through at our desks, SMT-Pod publications are easy to listen to and think about in the car, on your run, or while grading.
The SMT Newsletter features reports from SMT officers and committee chairs along with information on national and regional theory conferences, awards, calls for papers and articles, grant and fellowship information, and general news about people and events in the field. It is published twice a year; issues appear in February and August.
