The Formal Theory Study Group (FTSG) invites all formal theorists to attend a study day on musical form. The workshop will take place on June 30 2024 at the University of Edinburgh, immediately before the Society for Music Analysis’s annual Music Analysis Conference (EdMAC) on July 1–3, and feature the conference’s two keynote speakers.

Attending the study day is free, but participants should be SMA members (standard membership £20, student membership £10). Participants will be expected to pay for their own travel, but may be eligible to apply for an SMA bursary to support their costs. The day will involve two components:

1PM: A workshop for postgraduate students and early career scholars hosted by Yoel Greenberg. This session will involve group work analysing a toy corpus of works from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, aiming to identify and interpret trends in formal practices. Some small preparatory material will be distributed beforehand.
3PM: An analytical session on the first movement of Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony, introduced by Benedict Taylor, with Julian Horton, Anne Hyland, Janet Schmalfeldt, Christopher Tarrant, and Steven Vande Moortele as discussants.

All are welcome at the analytical session, but places for the student workshop are limited. To help the FTSG committee decide who will benefit most from attending, please email admin@formenlehre.co.uk by May 24 with the following attachments:

A one-page CV
A short statement (max 250 words) on your research interests, why you would like to attend, and how the event would benefit you.

The FTSG committee will let you know by the end of May if you have been allocated a place.
