Dear Colleagues,
You are warmly invited to an online panel discussion of Lorraine Byrne Bodley's new biography: Schubert. A Musical Wayfarer (Yale University Press, 2023). This enriching event will take place on Wednesday 31 January 2024 at 4pm GMT/5pm CET.
In this major new biography, Lorraine Byrne Bodley takes a detailed look into Schubert’s life, from his early years at the Stadtkonvikt to the harrowing battle with syphilis that led to his death at the age of thirty-one. Drawing on extensive archival research in Vienna and the Czech Republic, and reconsidering the meaning of some of his best-known works, Bodley provides a fuller account than ever before of Schubert’s extraordinary achievement and incredible courage. This is a compelling new portrait of one of the most beloved composers of the nineteenth century.
Hosted by the Schubert Research Centre at the Austrian Academy of Sciences Vienna, and the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin, and supported by the Society for Musicology in Ireland, this hour-long symposium will feature a discussion about the book between author Prof. Lorraine Byrne Bodley and Schubert scholars, Prof. Hans-Joachim Hinrichsen and Prof. Susan Youens. The symposium will be chaired by Prof. Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl, Chair of the Schubert Research Centre at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna.
