Proposals are invited on any aspect of music and the university. Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted by 31 December 2023 to mau2024@surrey.ac.uk. The language of the conference will be English.

We welcome a range of types of proposal, for instance:
• 20-minute conference papers (plus 10 minutes for questions)
• Panels of 3–4 papers (1.5–2 hours) on a related topic
• Roundtables (3–5 participants, 1 hour duration)
• Short position statements (c.10 minutes) on any aspect of the academic profession
• Music performances/other practice-based events linked to the conference themes
• ‘Teach-ins’ demonstrating aspects of teaching to a live audience
We particularly welcome papers that involve current students/recent graduates, scholars beyond the Euro-American frame, and contributors from other disciplines.
The organizers are very open to contributions from all types of teacher/scholar/practitioner coming from all fields of music study, teaching, and research – even if not the kind of academic who usually participates in conferences. We also welcome contributions from musicians of any repertory and tradition (including chamber groups, bands, and musical theatre collectives), who wish to offer a performance rather than an academic paper.
We also intend to hold roundtables on the following themes, and welcome approaches from potential panellists:
• The experience of the industry professional coming to academia
• The experience of scholars in vocationally oriented institutions
• Post-doctoral qualifications (Habilitation) and their effect on music teaching/research/practice
• Music and academic freedom
