The University of Alberta is pleased to host the conference-festival "Paradigmatic Revolutions: Reframing Western Music Globalism from the Perspective of Asian Composers" from April 1-5, 2025. This event will explore the intersections of tradition, modernity, and cultural identity in global music, with a focus on historically minoritized composers in the context of contemporary globalization. This event is part of the previous success of the 2022 scholarly-practice joint exchange program, “Borderless Flows: Improvisational Interactions Across Asia, Africa, and Beyond.”

We invite scholars, researchers, and musicians to submit abstracts that critically engage with musical modernity, transnational dynamics, and the aesthetics- political dimensions of sound from diverse perspectives, particularly those rooted in intercultural practices. • Guest Composer: Jia Guoping (Beijing Central Conservatory of Music)

Presentation Formats:

• Individual Paper: 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for questions. Abstract should be max. 250 words.
• Lecture-Performance: 20 minutes for lecture performance, plus 10 minutes for questions. Abstract should be max. 250 words, with performance accommodation needs.
