The SMT Executive Board reserves the right to revoke any SMT award at its sole discretion.

Grounds for Revocation. The Board may revoke an award if the recipient is convicted of a criminal offense, or confirmed to have engaged in conduct inconsistent with the criteria of the prize. In all cases, wrongdoing must be confirmed by a finding from an external body (governmental, judicial, or institutional), or through an admission by the accused individual.

Procedure. SMT members who believe an award should be revoked may contact the executive director at smt@societymusictheory.org with supporting documentation. Any staff, board, or committee member with knowledge of potentially revocable conduct must report it to the executive director or Board president.

Upon receiving a request, the executive director and president will assess whether the allegation is credible. If deemed credible, the request will be placed on the agenda of an upcoming board meeting. All revocation requests will be discussed in executive session and require a two-thirds majority vote to revoke.

If a prize is revoked, the recipient's name will be removed from the SMT website and the decision recorded in Board minutes.
