On the occasion of Arnold Schönberg's 150th birthday, the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna, the Research Center Arnold Schönberg und die Wiener Schule, the Department of Music Sociology, the Department of Popular Music, the Department of Musicology and Performance Studies (mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna), and the Department of Jazz Research (KUG - University of Music and Performing Arts Graz) are organizing an international symposium November 6-8, 2024.
The theme of the symposium centers on forms of Schönberg reception and adaptation encompassing the entire spectrum of popular music: scholarly lectures on all popular music genres (jazz, rock, hip hop, electronic dance music, etc.) dealing with both musical reception and reformulation as well as the interaction with Arnold Schönberg as a historical figure are welcome.
Lectures could include the following topics and issues:
Forms of appropriation in popular culture: re-interpretation, commentary, criticism, dissociation * Updating of Schönberg's works in musical practices: remix, mash up, quotation, etc.
References to Schönberg's compositional methods and sound aesthetics
Addressing Schönberg as a person: biographical, cultural and mass media references
Schönberg as a musical thinker: references to music theory, teaching, aesthetics, understanding of history
The symposium offers scholars the opportunity to present the findings of their research in a 30- minute lecture. Alternative presentation formats such as theme-based panels are possible.
Symposium languages: German and English.
Submissions with an abstract (approx. 300 words) and a short biography are requested by October 15, 2023, and should be sent to schoenberg2024@mdw.ac.at.
