The South Central Society for Music Theory invites submissions to its 2023 Annual Meeting. The meeting is scheduled to be hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi at the Gulf Park Campus on March 24-25, 2023. The program committee invites proposals on any topic related to music theory, broadly construed. This year we are excited host Julianne Grasso as our keynote speaker. Dr. Grasso is an Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Florida State University and specializes in analytical approaches to music in video games and multimedia. This year’s conference will also feature a student workshop, "Theorizing Musical Climax," held by Dr. Ji Yeon Lee. Dr. Lee is an Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music. Undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in participating in the workshop should complete the workshop interest form. Seating is limited and will be offered on a first come, first serve basis. More details can be found at scsmt.org. Submission Guidelines: Submissions should comprise a single document in .doc(x) or .pdf format. Proposals must be no more than 500 words, including footnotes/endnotes. Proposals should articulate the paper’s premise and its relation to existing music-theoretical research and provide some illustration of applications. In addition to the 500-word proposal, submissions may include up to four pages of supplementary materials (e.g., figures, tables, examples, or bibliography). Supplemental materials may include text annotations, but these annotations cannot introduce arguments or explanations beyond those presented in the proposal. Since proposals will be evaluated anonymously, author tags must be removed from pdf files and references to the author’s own work must be in the third person. Questions on the proposal guidelines can be directed to Wesley Bradford at wesley.bradford@louisiana.edu. Presentation Formats: Submissions may be made for 20-minute papers, 10-minute lightning talks, or poster presentations. Authors may request their proposal be considered for any or all the available formats. The program committee reserves the right to request a proposal in an alternate format, as necessary. Submission Restrictions: Only a single submission from an author will be considered. Previously published papers or papers given at national or international conferences will not be considered. Submission Deadline: To be considered, submissions should be received before 11:59 pm CST on December 12, 2022, through the Google Forms portal. Authors will be notified electronically of the Program Committee’s decision in early January, 2023. Student Paper Award: Graduate students who wish to be considered for the Student Paper Award will be asked to indicate interest in the Google Forms submission. The Student Paper Award includes a cash prize. Candidates are asked to submit a copy of their complete paper to the program chair (wesley.bradford@louisiana.edu) by Friday, February 17, 2023, at 11:59 pm CST.
