South Central Society for Music Theory Annual Meeting

The South Central Society for Music Theory invites submissions to its 2022 Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held in a hybrid format with the option for both virtual and in-person presentations. The in-person meeting will be hosted by the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, University of Memphis on April 1–2, 2022; the virtual sessions will be held on days surrounding this in late March/early April. Memphis, Tennessee is home to a vibrant music scene and is within a 6-hour drive of many southern and midwestern universities. The program committee invites proposals on any topic related to music theory, broadly construed. As the south-central region is the home of many of this past century’s most globally influential musical styles, we strongly encourage submissions related to this region’s musical traditions. This includes, but is not limited to, music of the southeast’s Indigenous peoples, the blues, gospel, rock, bluegrass, country, and concert music by Southern composers. Proposals are for 20-minute paper or poster presentations. Proposals must be no more than 500 words, counting footnotes, and include a descriptive title. In addition to the 500-word proposal, submissions may include up to four pages of supplementary materials (e.g., figures, tables, examples, or bibliography). Supplemental materials may include text annotations, but these annotations cannot introduce arguments or explanations beyond those presented in the proposal. Since proposals will be evaluated anonymously, author tags must be removed from pdf files and references to the author’s own work must be in the third person. Papers cannot have previously been presented at national meetings nor have already been published. Submission Deadline: To be considered, submission should be received before 11:59 pm EST on January 16, 2022 through the Google Forms portal. Authors will be notified electronically of the Program Committee’s decision by early February 2022. The Student Paper Award includes a cash prize and an opportunity to serve on the program committee for the 2023 SCSMT annual meeting. For full consideration, candidates will be asked to submit a copy of their paper to the program chair (mlboyle@ua.edu) by Friday, March 18, 2022 at 11:59 pm EST. Workshops: The conference will feature two workshops that are open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. One workshop will be delivered virtually; the other will be offered in person at the University of Memphis on Saturday, April 2nd. Note that these workshops are open to all conference attendees (not only for graduate students). By February 2022, preparatory materials for each workshop will be available online. COVID-19 Precautions: In order to protect vulnerable members of the SCSMT community, all in-person conference attendees will be required to wear a mask at all times indoors.
