In 2027, the Society for Music Theory will celebrate its 50th anniversary. As we look ahead to this milestone, we are building an archive that captures the people, ideas, and moments that have shaped our Society since its founding in 1977, and we need your help.
We invite you to share photographs, documents, and other materials connected to SMT's history. Items of interest include:
- Photos from annual meetings
- Conference programs, handouts, and other memorabilia
- Committee materials related to the Society
There are two ways to contribute:
- Submit online: Upload digital files at https://members.societymusictheory.org/page/smtmemories. Please include whatever you know about each item, such as the date, location, event, and the names of people pictured.
- Scan in person at our Annual Meeting: Bring your materials to the registration desk at the 2026 Annual Meeting this November. Our volunteers will scan your items on the spot and return the originals to you right away.
By submitting materials, you grant SMT permission to preserve them in the Society's archives and to use them in anniversary publications, exhibits, and online features. Please submit only items you own or have permission to share, and let us know if any item should be kept for archival purposes only.
Whether you attended the first meeting or your first meeting was last year, your memories are part of our history. We look forward to seeing what you share.
