Lecturer I in Music (non tenure-track)
GENERAL INFO

The MIT Music and Theater Arts Section is seeking a full-time Lecturer I to teach introductory classes in musics of the world and to expand our course offerings in ethnomusicology, broadly construed. The rank of Lecturer I holds an initial appointment of three years, with potential for a two-year reappointment, subsequent promotion to Lecturer II, and further renewals at that rank.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The primary responsibility is to teach three classes per semester. Though teaching assignments will vary, at least two per semester will be sections of Introduction to World Music (21M.030), a writing-intensive course. The successful candidate may also be asked to teach other subjects in the existing curriculum and will be expected both to develop new course offerings in their area(s) of expertise and interest and to help shape the goals and directions of the ethnomusicology curriculum. The position demands dynamic and innovative teaching and entails substantive engagement with students during MIT’s nine-month academic year.

The Lecturer I position is teaching-focused. However, candidates whose teaching is informed by active scholarly research and/or performance are preferred. In addition, we seek professionals who embrace empathy, courage, and self-reflection, and who will contribute to our program’s goals of inclusivity and equity.

QUALIFICATIONS

The qualified candidate has at least two years of teaching experience at the university level and holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology or a related field (ABD considered, but degree must be conferred by June 30, 2022) or equivalent experience.
