This is an exciting opportunity to deliver Harmony and Aural Training to some of the British Army’s most talented musicians who are embarking on the two-year British Army Bandmasters’ Course at the Royal Military School of Music Higher Training Wing (RMSM HTW). The HTW delivers training to the British Army’s Student Bandmasters who, on graduation, fulfil a role of Bandmaster in one of the fifteen Field Army Bands.

Professional academic staff at the RMSM HTW are all drawn from the UK professional music circuit.

Strong leadership skills and previous leadership experience in a senior role is desirable but not essential.

The post is part-time at 26 hours per week on a 44 week contract. The working pattern is on a flexible basis.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The primary duty of the post holder will be to teach Harmony and Aural to the British Army Bandmasters’ Course (BABMC) and International BABMC and support by means of Continuous Professional Development (CPD), Army musicians applying to attend the BABMC.

A successful applicant will be required to plan and organize the Harmony and Aural modules of the BABMC, selecting appropriate literature and textbooks for the various teaching subjects aligned with harmony throughout history beginning in the Renaissance period and culminating in modern day techniques. You will also be able to deliver harmonic contextuality in compositional techniques by covering a broad range of eras and composers. You should also be familiar with modern musical demands of the contemporary wind band. Additional responsibilities are:

> Take the lead in developing all harmony and aural aspects of the course in line with current training requirements.
> Provide Continuous Professional Development (CPD) instruction to musicians preparing for BABMC selection and Bandmasters approaching external examinations.
> Plan and organise the harmony and aural modules.
> Responsible for teaching and supporting the students, providing weekly formative feedback and arranging and marking both formative and summative assessments.
> You will be expected to attend appropriate meetings and help with internal double marking of other modules of the Bandmasters’ course

You will be answerable to the Chief Instructor (Head of School Operations) and will be a member of the Academic Course team.

QUALIFICATIONS

Although formal qualifications are not mandatory, it is preferable for any applicant to show a level of experience, technique and skill at a significant level. This will be assessed in your CV that will showcase your career in professional musical performance and/or teaching.

We are looking for:
> A dedicated, enthusiastic teacher with considerable documented experience and reputation within the subject of harmony and aural.
> You should have a wide portfolio of delivering complex harmonic techniques to Further Education students and a excellent working knowledge of compositional idioms.
> An applicant that will have an awareness of the qualities and expectations of the army’s young musicians in training, Student Bandmasters and RMSM staff.
> The applicant will also be willing to understand the cultural sensitivities of delivering training to international students.

Desirable Skills/Experience:
> Strong leadership skills and previous leadership experience in a senior role is desirable but not essential.
> The RMSM has a well-established International Bandmaster programme that is world-renowned. To ensure continuity, experience in teaching international students either in the UK or internationally is desirable but not essential.

Hotel Reservations 

The Hyatt Regency Riverfront Hotel (225 E Coastline Drive) has reserved a block of rooms for conference attendees. The rates are $169/night for single and double occupancy; $194/night for triple occupancy; $219/night for quadruple occupancy; and $169 for student quadruple occupancy (limited rooms available). Hotel reservations for non-students may be made online.  SMT student members should have received an email with a code to reserve at the student rate; please email Jennifer Diaz at smt@societymusictheory.org if you did not receive the email. 

Using the conference room block at this hotel helps us meet our contractual obligations and keeps you close to all conference activities.
