The Department of Music at Rhodes College invites applications from scholar/performers for a tenure-track position, Assistant Professor of Music; Instrumental and Popular Music Studies, to begin in August of 2023.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This position would serve as coordinator of instrumental music for the department and provide leadership for the continued growth in areas of Popular and World Music. This position would also work closely with the college’s endowed Mike Curb Institute for Music (a Billboard Top Music Business School) and the Lynne & Henry Turley Memphis Center.

Teaching opportunities offer flexibility for the candidate to continue or develop courses in their area(s) of expertise (such as ensemble direction, ethnomusicology, composition/theory, technology, applied instrumental instruction, music industry studies) in alignment with department needs and student demand.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate should have a terminal degree (Ph.D./D.M.A. or equivalent) by the time of hire, and be able to demonstrate the requisite experience and communication skills to coordinate and work with over twenty adjunct instrumental faculty members to continue building a sustainable program for student performers in a wide array of styles (jazz, popular, classical, world music, etc.) through ensembles and individual lessons.

Hotel Reservations 

The Hyatt Regency Riverfront Hotel (225 E Coastline Drive) has reserved a block of rooms for conference attendees. The rates are $169/night for single and double occupancy; $194/night for triple occupancy; $219/night for quadruple occupancy; and $169 for student quadruple occupancy (limited rooms available). Hotel reservations for non-students may be made online.  SMT student members should have received an email with a code to reserve at the student rate; please email Jennifer Diaz at smt@societymusictheory.org if you did not receive the email. 

Using the conference room block at this hotel helps us meet our contractual obligations and keeps you close to all conference activities.
