The Setnor School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University (Syracuse, NY) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Composition and Theory beginning August 15, 2024.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsibilities for this position will include: Teaching applied composition and undergraduate theory and/ear training courses, and advising master’s theses. Candidates will also be expected to teach upper-level composition-based coursework in at least two or more of the following areas: electroacoustic media/interactive software, counterpoint, orchestration, contemporary analysis, and performance/conducting/improvisation (contemporary music ensemble).

Service duties will include curricular development, student recruitment, enhancing the national visibility of the program, and satisfying the evolving educational needs of a diverse student population.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications: Terminal degree (DMA or PHD) required. Previous teaching experience and evidence of outstanding artistry as a composer required.

Our ideal candidate is an active composer in the process of building a national/international reputation with a portfolio of substantial public performances and recordings. A background teaching graduate and undergraduate music theory, ear training, and analysis is required. Expertise with jazz theory, although not required, would be highly valued.

Hotel Reservations 

The Hyatt Regency Riverfront Hotel (225 E Coastline Drive) has reserved a block of rooms for conference attendees. The rates are $169/night for single and double occupancy; $194/night for triple occupancy; $219/night for quadruple occupancy; and $169 for student quadruple occupancy (limited rooms available). Hotel reservations for non-students may be made online.  SMT student members should have received an email with a code to reserve at the student rate; please email Jennifer Diaz at smt@societymusictheory.org if you did not receive the email. 

Using the conference room block at this hotel helps us meet our contractual obligations and keeps you close to all conference activities.
