On the occasion of the upcoming 30th numbered volume of Music Theory Online to be published over the course of 2024, the journal is hosting a contest to develop a new logo for display on its webpages.

The current logo features an offset stack of the letters M, T, and O that includes no express mention of the journal’s title.

Desired logo features

We seek a new logo that incorporates the words “Music Theory Online” and that creatively evokes relevant aspects of our mission, which include music theory, inclusivity, innovation, and technology.

Submission requirements

  • We invite interested logo designers to create novel digital images in high resolution of at least 600 dpi.
  • While all common-use graphic file types are acceptable, SVG image files are particularly suited to our needs.
  • We further require that all submitted images be the product of human design, meaning hand-drawn or -assembled via digital art software. AI technology, if enlisted at all, should be reserved for inspiration only.
  • All submissions should be submitted to mto-editor@societymusictheory.org by March 22, 2024. Email submissions should include the words MTO Logo Contest [author name] in the heading.
  • A single designer may send in up to three contest submissions.

Process

The editors of MTO, in consultation with members of the editorial board, will decide on a winning submission. If the design proves workable and a good fit, it will be instituted sometime in the year 2024. Special note will be made about the design in the issue it debuts, and its creator will be given the opportunity to contribute a note on the website about the meaning(s) of and inspiration for the logo.

We look forward to seeing your ideas and thank you in advance for helping us to update the look and feel of our vibrant journal!
