Please do not register for the conference until you have received notice about the status of your application. 

Purpose

The SMT Committee on Race and Ethnicity administers the Minority Travel Grant to encourage diversity at the Annual Meetings of the SMT.

Eligibility
  • Applicants need not be SMT members.
  • Preference will be given to students and junior faculty (in that order). 
  • Financial need and research interests within the field of music theory will be used to evaluate the applications.
  • Only those who are citizens of, or are currently residing in, the US or Canada are eligible.
  • Individuals who self-identify with a race or ethnicity other than 'White' are eligible to apply.
Award

Typically up to 7 grants are made, with a maximum award of $400, plus complimentary conference registration.

Application process

To apply for a travel grant, please fill out the online Minority Travel Grant application form

Applicants are asked to provide the following information:

  • name, address, telephone, e-mail, and academic affiliation
  • purpose(s) for attending the conference; and
  • a clear statement of research interests and their relation both to conference participation and the field of music theory in general.
  • Applicants shall include a short curriculum vitae (no longer than two pages).
  • Students must also submit a letter of support from one of their major professors. The professor should email the letter of support directly to SMT’s Executive Director.

The Society for Music Theory celebrates its forty-seventh Annual Meeting at the Hyatt Regency Riverfront Hotel in Jacksonville, Florida, November 7–10, 2024.

Hotel Reservations 

The Hyatt Regency Riverfront Hotel (225 E Coastline Drive) has reserved a block of rooms for conference attendees. The rates are $169/night for single and double occupancy; $194/night for triple occupancy; $219/night for quadruple occupancy; and $169 for student quadruple occupancy (limited rooms available). Hotel reservations for non-students may be made online.  SMT student members should have received an email with a code to reserve at the student rate; please email Jennifer Diaz at smt@societymusictheory.org if you did not receive the email. 

Using the conference room block at this hotel helps us meet our contractual obligations and keeps you close to all conference activities.

Student Helpers

We are in need of student volunteers to assist during the conference. Volunteers will receive a registration fee waiver in exchange for 6.5 hours of service. The deadline to apply is September 6
