The Department of Music invites applications for a visiting assistant professor specializing in Music Theory, a non-tenure track 9 month appointment beginning August 16, 2021. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of an innovative, inclusive music curriculum, in a department of music that is deeply committed to the university's mission to serve the common good.

We are currently hiring for a one-year, full-time position with benefits. The successful candidate will be eligible to apply for a permanent, tenure-track position, for which we expect to conduct a search in the coming year.
The successful candidate will teach courses in music theory, including the required first-year theory courses for music majors (in Performance, Education, Music Therapy, Composition, Jazz Studies, and Music Studies), and/or courses in other areas of expertise, such as music technology or music history.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in music theory, composition, or closely related field
- Experience teaching music theory at the undergraduate level
- Articulated commitment to diversifying the music theory curriculum
- Effective written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:
- Doctoral degree in music theory or closely related field
- Successful teaching experience in theory, including methods inside and outside the Western classical tradition (e.g., jazz, popular music, or non-Western musics).
- Success in teaching in a related area (i.e.composition, jazz theory/composition, popular music, recording techniques, global music theory, music cognition, improvisation, acoustics, studio music instruction, etc.)
- Success in teaching music technology
- Success using technology and innovative pedagogies in theory curricula
- Successful Experience working with students and colleagues of diverse backgrounds
- Willingness to engage with Catholic and Marianist educational values that include educating the whole person and a commitment of service to the community, university and profession
- Demonstrated successful experience working collaboratively toward shared goals in and beyond the department
- Effective interpersonal communication skills
- Effective oral communication skills
- Effective classroom management skills
