The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM), a private, independent conservatory, announces a full-time faculty opening in Music Theory to begin in Fall 2022. CIM has a 100-year history of providing classical musical training at the highest level for both undergraduate and graduate populations. As it moves into its second century, CIM actively embraces the challenges and opportunities of the ever-changing musical and social landscape in preparing its students for musical careers of distinction and impact. We seek a colleague who is passionate about teaching within an integrated and rigorous skills-based undergraduate core which is focused primarily on preparing our students to perform or compose with technical prowess and informed, compelling artistry in the relentless quest for the highest level of excellence. Furthermore, the ideal candidate will be forward-thinking in their pedagogy and enhance our identity as a leading American conservatory committed to graduating young artists who will be the future of classical music. Although candidates with post-tonal expertise are preferred, all specialties are welcome and will receive full consideration.

JOB DESCRIPTION

- A skills-focused undergraduate core of written theory, keyboard, singing, and dictation
- Upper-level undergraduate and graduate coursework
- Mentoring of undergraduate theses
- Seminars
- Teaching assignments may include in-person, hybrid, and remote classes

Additional duties, pending candidate interest, may include (but are not limited to): serving on CIM faculty and DMA-examination committees, developing and/or teaching coursework in CIM’s new general-education curriculum, and developing collaborative projects with Case Western Reserve University and/or the Cleveland Institute of Art.

QUALIFICATIONS

- A completed Ph.D. (or ABD) in music theory, or a completed terminal degree in a related field
- A proven record of university-level teaching

- CIM does not employ a traditional rank-and-tenure system.
- Due to the nature of our undergraduate core curriculum, candidates should be prepared to demonstrate excellence in keyboard harmony, sight singing, and aural skills at an early stage of the interview process.

Hotel Reservations 

The Hyatt Regency Riverfront Hotel (225 E Coastline Drive) has reserved a block of rooms for conference attendees. The rates are $169/night for single and double occupancy; $194/night for triple occupancy; $219/night for quadruple occupancy; and $169 for student quadruple occupancy (limited rooms available). Hotel reservations for non-students may be made online.  SMT student members should have received an email with a code to reserve at the student rate; please email Jennifer Diaz at smt@societymusictheory.org if you did not receive the email. 

Using the conference room block at this hotel helps us meet our contractual obligations and keeps you close to all conference activities.

Student Helpers

We are in need of student volunteers to assist during the conference. Volunteers will receive a registration fee waiver in exchange for 6.5 hours of service. The deadline to apply is September 6
