The Department of Music invites applications for an assistant professor specializing in Music Theory. This is a tenure track, 9-month appointment beginning August 16, 2022. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of an innovative, inclusive music curriculum, in a department of music that is deeply committed to the university's mission to serve the common good.

The successful candidate will teach courses in required music theory sequence for music majors and additional courses in the candidate's area of expertise (music theory for non-majors, composition, music technology, or other).
Minimum Qualifications:
- ABD nearing completion in music theory, composition, or closely related field
- Experience teaching music theory at the undergraduate level
- Articulated commitment to diversifying the music theory curriculum
- Effective written communication skills
- Promise of excellence in research
Preferred Qualifications:
While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:
- Doctoral degree in music theory or closely related field
- Successful experience in one or more of the following:
> teaching undergraduate theory, including methods inside and outside the Western classical tradition (e.g., jazz, popular music, or non-Western musics).
> teaching in a related area (i.e.composition, jazz theory/composition, popular music, recording techniques, global music theory, music cognition, improvisation, acoustics, studio music instruction, etc.)
> teaching music technology
> using technology and innovative pedagogies in theory curricula
> working with and/or teaching socially and culturally diverse communities
> working collaboratively toward shared goals in and beyond the department
- A portfolio of peer reviewed research in music theory or a related field
- Commitment to breadth of education, including educating the whole person in the Marianist tradition to support the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion and a commitment of service to the community, university and profession.
- Effective interpersonal communication skills
- Effective oral communication skills
- Effective classroom management skills
