The Desautels Faculty of Music (DFOM) at the University of Manitoba (UM) (Winnipeg, Manitoba) is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track position in Music (any area) for an Indigenous music practitioner and/or scholar. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and begin on July 1, 2022. This opportunity is open to individuals who are Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit).
In reconsidering our curriculum and the music we teach, perform, and study, the DFOM has been taking fundamental steps toward creating an environment in which Indigenous students and scholars can thrive. To that end, we have established a faculty learning community focused on reconciliation and decolonization; we are developing new collaborative models and commissioning practices with Indigenous musicians; we have broadened both our methodologies and the scope of the musics with which we engage in music theory, musicology/ethnomusicology, and music education; and we have begun to reflect on the fundamental roles language and the land might play in decolonizing our faculty's activities. We are searching for a colleague who will model decolonial practices in their course content, the structure of their discourse, and interactions with students in their classroom, studio, and/or rehearsal hall. Ideally, the candidate will embed Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into their courses and amplify the voices of other Indigenous scholars and artists, thereby helping to place European classical music and jazz in a broader context, challenging the structures that uphold their dominance in our faculty and society.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach a full range of courses in their area(s) of expertise; maintain an active research and/or creative work program; and engage in a range of institutional, professional, and community service. Because this position will likely open new avenues of study in our curriculum, the candidate will be encouraged to develop new courses closely aligned with their research/artistic work in any area relevant to Indigenous experience related to music.
The ideal candidate will hold a terminal degree in their area of expertise. At minimum, they will have a master's degree in music and/or expertise in Indigenous cultural and musical practices. Although specialization remains open, priority will be given to candidates whose professional practice crosses disciplinary boundaries and/or engages with music outside the realm of Western art music. The DFOM is interested in applicants committed to engaging with Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and to bringing together academic and non-academic communities. Post-secondary teaching experience will be considered an asset. Further information regarding the UM's initiatives with respect to expanding Indigenous leadership is available at: https://umanitoba.ca/about-um/vice-president-indigenous/engaging-community-expanding-indigenous-leadership.
See original job posting and apply online at: https://viprecprod.ad.umanitoba.ca/DEFAULT.ASPX?REQ_ID=19672.
Please send a cover letter, CV, statement of teaching philosophy, and at least two samples of recent research and/or creative work. As the DFOM has been actively engaged with decolonizing its curriculum, supporting Indigenous student success, and diversifying our role within the UM and the community, applicants are asked to also include a statement about how they see themselves contributing to these vital initiatives. Finally, please arrange for three (3) confidential letters of reference to be sent under separate cover to:
