The Department of Performing Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 1, 2024. We seek a forward-thinking colleague and specialist in Black music to build new opportunities for our students.
Scholars, practitioners, and artist-scholars are all encouraged to apply. Areas of interest include but are not limited to popular music, indigenous music, social justice, race and sound, African-American music, religious music, the African diaspora, ensemble leadership, and environmental activism. As a multi-disciplinary unit, our department embraces multiple forms of scholarly/creative hybrids and treats a wide variety of outputs toward tenure consideration.
The faculty member will typically teach four undergraduate courses per academic year and will have the opportunity to develop new courses and initiatives in their area(s) of interest. All faculty are expected to hold office hours and participate in Department, College, and University activities and service.
Candidates should have a record of teaching success at the university level and customarily hold a PhD or DMA in music (ABD will be considered). Applicants without a doctorate should have an advanced degree in the field and commensurate professional experience.
