Dean of the School of Music
JOB DESCRIPTION

Baylor University (Waco, TX) seeks a visionary leader to guide its School of Music.

The School’s outstanding reputation, contributions to the world of music, and exemplification of Baylor’s distinctive values make it a vital university asset. The School provides a transformational education that prepares students for successful careers in music and related fields; enjoys the breadth, experience, and resources of a private R1 university; and embodies an institutional mission of integrating academic excellence and Christian commitment within a caring community.

Music students at Baylor thrive in a mission-driven environment characterized by a nurturing resident faculty, an unwavering pursuit of musical excellence, a global perspective, and a dedication to service. They investigate the rich musical and cultural heritage of the past, develop superior musical skills and knowledge in the present, and explore and create new modes of musical expression for the future.

Building upon this heritage, the next dean will be a forward-looking leader who advances Baylor’s reputation for excellence in the education of musicians, engages effectively with both internal and external constituencies, and empowers faculty and staff. The new dean will lead the School during a time of great potential and promise, coinciding with the launch of a new strategic plan for Baylor. He or she will have an unparalleled opportunity to make a personal mark on the future of the School.

Baylor is engaged in its largest and most ambitious fundraising campaign, Give Light. The University surpassed its $1.1 billion goal in February 2022, with the School of Music nearly doubling its unit goal through extraordinary donor support. The next dean will be an advocate for the School’s philanthropic priorities, identifying donor passions aligned with the most critical needs and building resources through fundraising and grant work. Scholarship, capital, and endowment support will remain key priorities.
