POSITION/RANK
Assistant Director of Choral Activities and Lecturer in Music
GENERAL INFO

The Department of Music at Smith College invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Choral Activities (ADCA) and Lecturer in Music, to begin July 1, 2024. This is a full-time, benefits eligible, two-year position, with the possibility of renewal for a third and final year. A Master’s degree is required by the time of appointment. Candidates from groups underrepresented in choral directing are encouraged to apply.

JOB DESCRIPTION

In collaboration with the Director of Choral Activities, the successful candidate will conduct the Glee Club and Chamber Singers regularly in rehearsal and in concert. The ADCA will also teach Introduction to Singing--a class for students with little to no singing experience--and Fundamentals of Music, which covers Western notation and basic elements of music theory, including intervals, keys, rhythm and meter. Candidates with experience in both choral conducting and classroom teaching are encouraged to apply. The position also carries the expectation of administrative responsibilities, and the successful candidate will possess the ability to work effectively with colleagues and student leaders. Further duties may include teaching private voice lessons and other related curricular responsibilities, as assigned by the chair. For decades, the ADCA has been a unique opportunity for pre-doctoral conductors. Previous holders have gone on to significant careers in the field. The position provides an opportunity to learn how to run a high-achieving choral program with guidance from a senior mentor.
