The Department of Arts and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Humanities at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (tenured) position in Musicology from January 1, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
We are seeking a music scholar appointable at the level of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor with a specialization in popular music studies and digitalization. The successful candidate should have research and teaching expertise in one or more of the following areas: digital sound and music production; digital media and music technology, including software and hardware; distribution and reception; and any other relevant areas. In addition, we expect the candidate to have practical expertise in and/or experience teaching Ableton Live, as well as experience integrating digital musical practice into research and/or teaching contexts in order to support the close interaction between academic and practical musical instruction within the university’s Musicology division.
In keeping with the Department’s ongoing efforts to address the increased role of digitalization in society through its interdisciplinary research initiatives and curricular development, we are seeking a scholar who is actively engaged in the long-term development of digitalization as a central part of musicological research, and in connection with professional development and employment opportunities among musicology students.
Teaching responsibilities will include both general introductory courses at the BA level and special topics courses at the BA and MA levels.
Musicology in the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies at the University of Copenhagen is characterized by research and teaching that encompasses the study of all music and sound(s) that can be perceived aesthetically. The candidate will be part of a research and teaching environment that includes musicological study of Western art and popular music traditions, ethnomusicology and non-Western musical traditions, and sound studies.
The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the current positions in and history of the field of popular music studies, and an awareness of ongoing theoretical and methodological developments and challenges therein. The candidate will demonstrate a commitment to understanding the role of pop music studies within the UCPH Musicology program, and the corresponding pedagogical issues involved.
Tenure-track assistant professors must hold an academic record demonstrating internationally competitive research, and/or have internationally recognized potential to make a future impact.
Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory, but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be taken into account. Applicants’ outreach qualifications, including the ability to attract external funding, will also be considered.
Within a reasonable period of time (3-6 years), non-Danish-speaking appointees are expected to acquire proficiency in Danish sufficient to be able to interact with colleagues and students.
Six overall criteria apply for assistant professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates.
In connection with the appointment of the position of associate professor, we emphasise that the applicant has research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be achieved by satisfactory employment as an assistant professor or tenure track assistant professor.
The applicant is expected to be able to take part in all the activities of the department, including examinations and administration, and to manage research projects, provide pedagogical supervision, support assistant professors and participate in academic assessment panels.
The duties of the position are evenly distributed on tasks related to teaching and tasks related to research (including relevant administration and knowledge-sharing). Hence, the assessment of applicants’ qualifications will assign equal weight to documented competences in the field of teaching, pedagogy and didactics as in the field of research, research collaboration and research organisation. Applicants with documentation of excellent teaching skills including experience with development of teaching and with experiences and reflections on how most effectively to integrate research and teaching activities will be given priority.
In addition, emphasis will be placed on the following professional and personal qualifications:
> Research qualifications, which will be assessed in relation to the period of active research, the degree of originality and academic output.
> The applicant’s scientific record, academic breadth, depth and rigor.
> Teaching qualifications in relation to didactic development
> Experience and qualifications with regard to dissemination of research, knowledge-sharing and engagement with the wider public
> Significant skills in regard to external funding
> Interest in collaborative research work and in the development of own academic leadership skills

Should any material submitted consist of work with named co-authors, or work that is otherwise the result of collective academic endeavours, the extent of the applicant’s contribution to the work must be clearly stipulated. The Faculty may ask for a signed statement from the co-authors stipulating the extent and nature of each individual’s contribution.
Only material in English, German, French, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish will be assessed.
After the application deadline, the Head of Department selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee. All applicants are notified whether their application has been accepted for assessment. The Dean subsequently appoints an expert assessment committee tasked with carrying out an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee. Applicants are ultimately offered the opportunity of commenting on the part of the assessment relating to themselves before the appointment is finalized.
