University of Louisville
Assistant Professor of Music Theory

The University of Louisville School of Music invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music Theory. We seek an active and productive researcher, as well as an innovative and committed teacher, to serve our students and become part of our scholarly and creative community.

The music theory concentration consists of three tenure-track faculty and additional term faculty. Our new first- and second-year theory and musicianship curriculum, with a modular structure incorporating a more diverse array of music and concepts, will be implemented beginning Fall 2024. The new faculty member will play an important role in continuing to design and implement this curriculum, and applicants are encouraged to discuss their ideas for creating an inclusive, pluralistic music theory classroom in their materials.

The teaching duties of this position will include teaching core theory and musicianship, electives and graduate-level courses, and other teaching as assigned. Our curriculum includes courses covering theory and analysis of Western classical music, popular music, jazz, and post-tonal music, as well as other courses on specialized topics. Our undergraduate core also includes instruction in musicianship and music fundamentals. We encourage applications from candidates who teach in these or other areas of music theory.

Required qualifications:
PhD in music theory or equivalent (ABD may apply if the PhD will be received no later than 7/31/24)
Experience teaching music theory and musicianship
Strong musical skills
Active research agenda in music theory

Preferred qualifications:
At least three years of teaching experience beyond the graduate assistantship
Experience teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels
Record of, or potential for, significant scholarly achievement in music theory
