Dickinson College invites applications for a one-year sabbatical replacement as Visiting Assistant Professor of Music. The term of the appointment is July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025. The candidate’s scholarly focus should be Western music, listening practices, or music theory, after 1750 (broadly conceived), but the specific area of expertise is open.

Dickinson College is a highly selective four-year, independent liberal arts college with 2300 students. It is located 20 minutes west of Harrisburg and is a two-hour drive from Baltimore, Washington DC and Philadelphia. Visiting Assistant Professors have full access to Dickinson College research and development opportunities.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will contribute five academic courses to the department’s offerings, including: 1) a 300-level interdisciplinary seminar for advanced majors; 2) MUAC 102 The Listening Mind (our second semester of the music history sequence) or one 100 level elective course designed for the wider undergraduate population 3) MUAC 221 (Music in Media); 3) two courses within our music theory sequence (MUAC 125, 126, 245, 246).

We seek applications from candidates whose scholarship and teaching promise to make meaningful interdisciplinary connections (both within subfields in music and to other departments or programs). The successful candidate will actively contribute to building an inclusive learning environment and demonstrate commitment to teaching a diverse range of repertoire from a variety of perspectives. Some opportunities to cross-list courses in other departments are possible.

QUALIFICATIONS

1) a Ph.D. in musicology, music theory, or related field (ABD will be considered); 2) evidence of dynamic and successful teaching at the collegiate level.
