The Music and Theater Arts Section of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) with a specialty in composition, broadly defined. Position to begin July 1, 2025, or on a mutually agreed date thereafter. The Section offers supportive mentorship to junior faculty and seeks individuals who practice collaboration, empathy, and self-reflection in the service of sustaining an inclusive and welcoming academic culture.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will teach subjects in composition, and related topics, in the existing curriculum and will subsequently develop new course offerings in line with their interests and the needs of the Section. The teaching load for an Assistant Professor is three classes per academic year. Assistant Professors are also expected to serve on committees, advise students, and participate fully in the governance of the Section, the School, and the Institute. Promotion and tenure will require evidence of innovative creative work that has the potential for tangible impact on the field.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should hold a PhD or DMA in Music Composition, or a related field by the start of employment. The qualified candidate is an active and innovative composer with a minimum of two years of teaching experience at the university level. Active engagement in other areas of music – including but not limited to areas such as improvisation, music technology, performance, production, scholarship, theory, etc. - will be taken into consideration but are not required.
