We are pleased to announce the publication of a new issue of Music Theory Online.

The editorial and production staff is proud to note that this is a much larger publication than is typical. Appearing first are four articles and a book review that, as a group, treat the theory and analysis of common-practice, post-tonal, pop, and theater musics. Along with these, there is a timely and highly important report on Covid-19, which documents in detail the experiences of a large number of theorists striving to maintain their research, teaching, and careers during a period of intense personal, familial, and financial difficulty.

We are extremely pleased to offer, in addition, a full guest issue on global music theory titled Music Theory in the Plural. This project, proposed and expertly stewarded by Edwin Li, Chris Stover, and Anna Yu Wang, seeks to fill a notable gap in global music studies by making a greater number of theoretical source documents from other cultures available to Western scholars. The extended table of contents below indicates a further noteworthy aspect of their work: to foster dialog and further enliven interest, the editors have invited authors who research in related conceptual areas to write companion commentaries on all of the translations.

We, the Editorial Board and Staff of MTO wish to thank all members of the Society for Music Theory for their patience and for their generous, sustained support. We hope you enjoy this “double issue,” and look forward to bringing you more scholarship in the spring!

Best Regards,
Brent Auerbach
Editor, Music Theory Online
