The Graduate Theory Association and Graduate Musicology Association of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music are pleased to announce their joint 2026 Symposium of Research in Music, to take place in Bloomington, Indiana on February 6th and 7th, 2026.
We are very happy to welcome Dr. Susan McClary (Case Western Reserve University) as our keynote speaker – Dr. McClary will also lead a student workshop at the event. Additionally, the conference will feature talks and workshops by members of the IU Music Theory and Musicology faculty (TBD).
We are currently soliciting proposals relevant to any subfield of music research, including (but not limited to) music theory, music analysis, musicology, ethnomusicology, and related disciplines. Papers may address any musical repertoire, as we hope to feature a wide variety of musical conversations.
Paper presentations will be twenty minutes in length and delivered in-person at Ford-Crawford Hall, Jacobs School of Music. Each presenter can expect five to ten minutes of Q&A following their talk. Accepted papers will be organized in sessions of three.
The deadline for proposals is Friday, November 28. Submissions should consist of a 200-400 word proposal submitted using this form: https://forms.gle/ChAUfgy9iSB4MgEs8. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. A maximum of 2 pages of supplemental materials, including up to 3 figures and a bibliography, may also be submitted; this is recommended for music theory papers.
The form will ask for your name, email address, institutional affiliation (if any), and academic status; do not include any such identifying information in your proposal or accompanying materials. All questions can be directed to Drake Eshleman at gta@iu.edu.
