Galant Schema Studies will hold its third international conference on galant schema theory via Zoom from March 21-23, 2025 (Eastern Time, New York). The conference will include papers, lecture-recitals, and discussions. We invite submissions that take advantage of the digital format of the conference.

Since the publication of Robert Gjerdingen’s 'Music in the Galant Style' in 2007, galant schema theory has become a significant analytical framework for an historically-informed approach to understanding past practices in music composition. This conference further explores how schema theory may extend compositional practices from the Italian conservatory system in the present day.

Possible avenues of inquiry include:

- Relationships between schemata and historical performance practices, such as the realization of figured basses and improvisation.
- Composition, including the completion of unfinished works and the continuation or repurposing of historical practices.
- Pedagogy, including the use of 18th- and 19th-century pedagogical texts in the teaching of composition/partimento to students in modern conservatory settings.
- Analysis, such as the use of schema theory in the development of further analytical methods of historically-inspired understanding and scholarship.

We also recognize this conference coincides with J.S. Bach’s birthday weekend and invite any presentations on J.S. Bach and his family/circle. A Bach’s Birthday Bingo will take place at the end of the afternoon session on Friday, March 21.

Abstracts of no more than 500 words may be sent by January 15, 2025 to Jonathan Salamon and Alexander Nicholls at galantschemata25 -at- gmail.com. Please include any anticipated multimedia needs should your presentation require them.

Each presenter will receive a 40-minute slot for a 30-minute presentation, plus 10 minutes for questions. If your presentation would benefit from a different time arrangement, please include those parameters in your proposal. All presentations are expected to be live.
