The Society for Music Analysis's Formal Theory Study Group, in collaboration with the University of Toronto’s Centre for the Study of Nineteenth-Century Music, is pleased to announce an online study day, ‘Beyond Corpus Study’, occurring on Friday November 29. Framed as a response to Nathan Martin’s recent article “Corpus Studies and ‘Close Listening’”, this day examines the challenges confronted by corpus studies—whether epistemological, practical, aesthetic, or otherwise—and where formal theory may be headed. The day is scheduled as follows:

Friday November 29, 9AM EST/2PM GMT:

Responses to the article from Markus Neuwirth and Martin Rohrmeier, with reply from Nathan Martin (90 min)
Short Break (30 min)
Roundtable panel featuring Julian Horton, Steven Vande Moortele, Benedict Taylor, and Yoel Greenberg (90 min)

This event will primarily take place online, but will be hosted hybridly at Durham and Toronto. If you wish to attend these events in person, please contact Ardi (rafael.d.echevarria@durham.ac.uk) or Elwyn (elwyn.rowlands@mail.utoronto.ca) respectively by Monday November 25.
