The Music Department (http://music.ucsc.edu) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant (tenure-track) rank position in the field of African, African-American and/or Global-African music composition, with possible additional expertise in performance, improvisation, interdisciplinary work, and music theory.
Anticipated start: July 1, 2022, with the academic year beginning in September 2022. Degree requirements must be met by June 30, 2022 for employment effective July 1, 2022. Position contingent on budgetary approval.

The Music Department seeks a composer with a record of accomplishment, experience and expertise in a wide range of African, African-American, and/or Global-African traditions, approaches, modes of expression and relevant practices that may include, but are not limited to, any traditional or contemporary African musics, musics of the Global African diaspora, traditional Afro-Caribbean and jazz practices, African-American experimentalism, African-American legacies of collective improvisation, Hip Hop, and related African-American traditions in electronic or popular music. The successful candidate must be capable of teaching, mentoring, and advising in a range of topics in a graduate program in composition, and to both major and non-major undergraduates.
Other desired qualifications may include original and innovative work in these areas or other music in Africa, jazz, blues, Hip Hop, and experimental composition (spontaneous/premeditated) or improvisational traditions; work that effectively connects research and musical practices within and beyond the university.
We encourage national and international applicants from a diverse spectrum of 21st-century compositional approaches in African, Global African, and African-American traditions who are: prepared to provide instruction in both large and small classroom environments, capable of contributing significantly to graduate education and mentoring doctoral students with varying backgrounds and practices; and qualified to contribute to the Music Department’s newly redesigned undergraduate curriculum, which offers three concentrations of study--Global Musics, Western Art Music, and Contemporary Practices--as well as three minors--Electronic Music, Jazz, Spontaneous Composition and Improvisation, and Western Art Music.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Ph.D. or D.M.A. (or an equivalent foreign degree) in Music or a related field, or six years’ professional experience that consists of a national or international record of performances, recordings and exhibitions in music venues or alternative venues engaging the general public (basic qualifications must be met at the time of application). Degree requirements expected to be completed by June 30, 2022.
