Position Summary
The School of Theatre and Music at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) seeks a dynamic teacher with the facility to engage a broad set of music theory and learning practices to join our mission-driven faculty in the School of Theatre and Music. The successful candidate will teach core courses in the music theory sequence and mentor and advise students; and they will approach music theory in culturally responsive ways, place high value on aural ways of knowing and organizing music, and center creative musical activities (arranging, composing, and improvising) in their teaching.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Teach core courses in the music theory sequence;
- Mentor and advise students;
- Attend faculty meetings;
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in music; a record of, or clear potential for, professional development presentations at conferences, and demonstrated leadership potential in the field; demonstrated success in teaching music theory at the college/university levels (including graduate assistantships).
Preferred Qualifications
Doctoral degree in music theory; three or more years of experience teaching music at the college/university level; competence in and engagement with vernacular, popular, indigenous, and non-Western musical practices; and an understanding of and experience with teaching populations that reflect UIC’s urban student body.
