Call for Submissions, Black Music, in Theory

We are pleased to announce a call for submissions to Black Music, in Theory, an open-access peer-reviewed online journal of University of Michigan Journals.

BMiT highlights Black and African American perspectives on music and music theory, and welcomes submissions from all music theorists, musicologists, ethnomusicologists, music critics, composers, performers, and others invested in African American and Black music. For more information, visit the BMiT website.

BMiT invites article submissions of no more than 10,000 words, or shorter essays of roughly 3,000 words. BMiT will also consider thematic issues or possible other formats such as conference reports or the publication of relevant conference panels, among others.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

African Americans in music theory.
African American and African diasporic figures in classical and concert music.
African American opera.
Musical genres with roots in African Americanism such as blues, boogie-woogie, disco, doo-wop, funk, gospel, hiphop, jazz, Motown, ragtime, rap, rock, soul, among others.
The history of racial exclusionism or antiblackness in the American academic study of music.
Analytical approaches to specific works, expressions, or music genres with roots in African Americanism.
African American music's reception in American music institutions.
The intersection of African American musical traditions with other musics.
