Assistant Professor of Music Theory, Tenure Track

The Department of Music at Carleton College (Northfield, MN) is pleased to announce a full-time position in Music Theory at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track). We seek an emerging scholar with a strong background in teaching music theory and related subjects to small groups of undergraduates in a liberal arts setting. We are looking for a candidate whose research interests will complement the methodologies and expertise of the other members of the department. As such, we seek candidates with interdisciplinary approaches to music theory and analysis; these might include the analysis of popular and world musics, multimedia theory and analysis, corpus studies, music cognition, computational approaches, and/or gender/ LGBTQIA+ studies. Carleton is committed to developing its faculty to better reflect the diversity of our student body and American society. Women and members of underrepresented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000. Located in the thriving two-college town of Northfield, Minnesota, it is forty-five miles from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, in easy reach of a vibrant metropolitan area that is home to three million people and rich cultural resources. Carleton College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, marital status, veteran status, actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, status with regard to public assistance, disability, or age in providing employment or access to its educational facilities and activities

The position involves teaching core courses in our music theory curriculum as well as additional courses in the candidate’s area(s) of interest (see https://www.carleton.edu/music/major/requirements-2/ for specific information regarding our curriculum). Carleton's academic calendar involves three 10-week terms per year; a FT teaching load is 2-2-1. We seek candidates who will be able to forge teaching connections with other departments on campus, and we are particularly interested in candidates committed to teaching a diverse student body in a liberal arts context.

Candidates should have a PhD in Music Theory or a related field, and should have their degree in hand before the position begins on September 1, 2024.

Candidates should submit the following materials: cover letter; curriculum vitae; and a description (2-3 pages) of a course or a course unit that would engage students from diverse backgrounds in an undergraduate, residential liberal arts environment. After passing through an initial screening process, applicants may receive a request for scholarly materials and contact information for three references, including at least one who is able to specifically address their teaching experience. All application materials can be submitted at go.carleton.edu/carletonjobs. Review of applications will begin December 1st, 2023.
