JOB DESCRIPTION

The Hall Center’s mission is to support research in the humanities, to create knowledge, and to share that knowledge with diverse communities. The Hall Center for Humanities (HCH) embodies the belief that the humanities must play a critical role in building a humane future for this world. The Hall Center for the Humanities supports, creates, and disseminates research in the humanities; provides an intellectual hub for scholars and students in the humanities, arts, and humanistic social sciences; and fosters interdisciplinary conversation across the University of Kansas. Through its public programming, the Hall Center makes visible the significance and continued relevance of humanities research, engaging diverse communities across the state in dialogue about local, national, and global issues that humanities research addresses. The University of Kansas is the state’s flagship university, an R-1 institution, and a member of the Association of American Universities, with 40 graduate programs ranked by US News. Founded in 1865, KU enrolls 27,638 students, employs nearly 2,900 faculty members, and offers its programs in nine locations, including online through Jayhawk Global and at its research residential campus on beautiful and historic Mt. Oread in Lawrence, Kansas. Lawrence has a lively downtown and a thriving arts and music scene, and its local government has enacted ordinances supporting equality for all members of its population.

The Hall Center for the Humanities is one of 11 designated research centers that fall under the auspices of the University of Kansas Office of Research. The Office of Research facilitates innovation, creative activity, discovery, and the application and dissemination of knowledge. The Director reports to KU's Vice Chancellor for Research, sets the strategic direction for the Center, and advances both KU's and the Center's mission through outstanding programming, faculty and student support in humanities study and research, and public engagement. The Center is housed in a striking 14,000-square-foot building that was completed in 2005. It has $3 million in endowment and a current annual operating budget of approximately $1.3 million. The Director works with a total staff of nine, an external advisory board, and an executive board composed of KU humanities faculty.

The University of Kansas seeks a Director for the Hall Center for the Humanities who is an accomplished scholar and a visionary, collaborative, and strategic leader with a deep commitment to humanistic inquiry and practice. The next director will possess a scholarly profile and achievements commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor with tenure at the University of Kansas.
